Mornington Race Course

Mornington, VICTORIA

Over the past 3 – 4 years it was becoming apparent the existing synthetic ThoroughTrack at Mornington RC was requiring an upgrade and planning was put into place.

As a replacement for the ThoroughTrack it has been proposed to install a Sand/Fibre
surface that would provide some characteristics of a synthetic track but without the high
capital investment required, it would also provide superior wet weather durability and greater
surface shear strength than the conventional sand tracks available at Mornington currently.

The works to include the following;

  • Replacement of the existing synthetic ThoroughTrack with a Sand/Fibre track consisting of locally sourced sand imported fibre.
  • The Sand/Fibre surface would provide some characteristics of a synthetic track but without the high capital investment required, it would also provide superior wet weather durability and greater surface shear strength than the conventional sand tracks available at Mornington currently

The project was delivered on time and to the satisfaction of Melbourne Racing Club and the racing community.

Sandown Race Course

Sandown, VICTORIA

With Sandown conducting up to 30 race meetings each year, an upgrade to the course will re-establish Sandown Racecourse as a first-class track and restore confidence in the course's racing conditions.

Sandown was first built in 1965 and then redeveloped by the Melbourne Racing Club in 2003. The upgrade undertaekn in late 2013 ensure Sandown remains a premier racing facility.

Appointed Principal contractor, the programming of works for the project required the redevelopment to be undertaken whilst the facilities were used for continuing V8 Super Car races and Caravan Shows.

With the irrigation and drainage system not being replaced only repaired where necessary, considerable care was required in the process of stripping the surface and exposing the drainage layer. The works methodology required the most stringent management of movement of plant throughout the site in protecting the drainage system.

A great project and with support from the team at Melbourne Racing, a succesful outcome was achieved.

Cairns Jockey Club - Cannon Park

Cairns, QUEENSLAND

On Thursday 6th December 2012, Racing Minister Steve Dickson turned the first sod on a $1.96 million makeover for the Cairns Jockey Club at Cannon Park.

The project saw the existing turf track completely rebuilt, the installation of a grassed access track suitable for ambulances and a much-needed renovation of the current stable facilities.

The upgrade provided a much needed boost to Cairns racing, allowing the club to attract stronger race fields and entice more patrons to the track.

Cairns Jockey Club CEO Graham Thornton said the upgrade was vital to the future of the club.

“Race meetings at Cannon Park are constantly at risk of being cancelled, due to the rapid deterioration of the track when it rains. We have managed to achieve the best of both worlds, we have a highly qualified southern racecourse builder, utilising local contractors," Mr Thornton said.

"McMahons have built some of the best tracks in the country including Moonee Valley, Royal Randwick and Flemington.

The upgrade saw the delivery of a new irrigation system and improved drainage system, as well as consistent track cambers and new turf which will reduce the number of cancelled meetings and associated lost revenue.

Gawler Race Course
Gawler, South Australia

The redevelopment of the Gawler Racecourse,  approved by the Town of Gawler,  involved a comprehensive upgrade and reconfiguration of track infrastructure and racing facilities, the incorporation of water resources initiatives and open space opportunities, together with the construction of a new, multi-purpose function facility at a combined, estimated cost of $12 million.

The old Gawler Racecourse and facilities have for a considerable time been of a poor standard for racing. With the rationalisation of theAdelaide metropolitan race tracks it has become necessary to upgrade the facilities at the Gawler track. With the support of the South Australian Government, Thoroughbred Racing SA and the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club, a significant investment is being made at the site to bring the facilities up to an acceptable standard for racing and patrons.

Given our considerable experteise in racecourse copnstruction, McMahons were contracted to undertake all the necessary civil works associated with the track reconstruction.

Feedback from the first race meet on the new track have been extremely positive.

Frances Nelson QC, who had the honour of being the first person to ride a horse on the new main racetrack, spoke glowingly of the racing surface. It's a magical surface, the cushion in the track is just fantastic, Ms Nelson said last Friday morning. This is the best racing surface in South Australia.

The Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club is uniquely located just 40 minutes North of Adelaide, on the main road into the town of Gawler. In recent years, Gawler has gone from being regarded as a country town, and now is well known as an outer metropolitan suburb of Adelaide, while maintaining the country and rural atmosphere for which it is recognised.

Alan Scott Park

MORPHETTVILLE, South Australia

The much-anticipated second turf track at Allan Scott Park Morphettville was completed by McMahons.

The new track, known as 'The Parks', will enable the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) to conduct up to 70 race meetings a year. The Parks track has a circumference of 2100 metres and a width of 25 metres with the finishing straight 320 metres long. The number of starters per race can accommodate 14 runner run over distances between 1000 and 2400 metres, while hurdle and steeple races can be run over 3000 and 3350 metres respectively.

The new track was designed to incorporate a chute that allows races over the classic 1400 metre distance.

With a construction program demanding aggressive deadlines along with the track training facilities remaining open throughout construction, the successful outcome can be attributed to a strong project management discipline and team focused on completing the project on time.

Murray Bridge Race Club
Murray Bridge, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Gifford Hill is the greenfield site for the development of the new thoroughbred racing facility.

The works undertaken included the earthworks, drainage, irrigation, growing medium, turf training and sand traning tracks and various structures. Works were also undertaken i the construction of ambulance track and associated chutes.

The course development is integrated within the larger Murray Bridge equine and village development.

The all-new outer turf track has a circumference of 2160m, a width of 30m and a home straight of approximately 450m.

The inner track measures 1996m in circumference with a width of 20m. The site  also includes a sand training track approximately 1600m in length.

Yarra Valley Racing Club

 Yarra Glen, VICTORIA

Racing Victoria (RV) and the Yarra Valley Racing Inc (YVR) contracted McMahons to undertake extensive remedial work on the Yarra Valley thoroughbred racing track.

The Yarra Valley thoroughbred track was closed for racing and training when a section of the racing surface collapsed during the running of the race meeting on 29 December 2010.

An extensive review of the circumstances surrounding the collapse determined that two floods at the Yarra Valley racecourse late 2010, had weakened the drainage system underneath the turf track. These floods were also responsible for washing away YVR’s sand training track.

The project covered two main components of work being the reconstruction of the  course  proper  and  the  upgrade  of  the  race  day  precinct.

Royal Randwick

RANDWICK, New South Wales

The Australian Jockey Club Limited conducts 60 race meetings at two racecourses, the historic and prestigious Royal Randwick and the country style atmosphere of Warwick Farm.

The course proper at Royal Randwick undertook reconstruction comprising a total area of some 90,000m2.
McMahons were  contracted to undertake the task of achieving the 0+10 mm tolerances on the drainage and sand medium as specified by the consultants.  The tolerances have to be met even on the complex sloping contours of the turns and this is made possible utilising our three dimensional levelling technology.

The AJC Ltd hosts one of the world's premier thoroughbred racing experiences by ensuring top quality racing and presentation of Carnivals, providing the finest customer service to members, owners, sponsors and the general public. Recently the AJC implemented a plan to upgrade facilities that will showcase the Club as a world class provider of racing, entertainment and events.
